The Ear is the Boss

I have trained and taught people who considered themselves to have no ear, and in some cases that seemed very true.  For example I have had some students who could not tell if one note was higher or lower in pitch than another, let alone if an instrument was out of tune, but after a short time of actually training and playing they could hear when the guitar was out of tune, I would wait sometimes to see if they noticed, and of course I was very pleased when they could tell the difference on their own.

One simple exercise that can help is to always practice (as this is a good warm up exercise too) a Major Scale.

The Major Scale is one of the main Keys to music, apart from training the fingers and also helping the ear to develope.

Practical Theory

With practical theory there are some very basic things needed that one should know like chord structures on the instrument itself, for example how to make one chord shape that is a Major chord into a Minor chord.
